Step 1:
Remove all of the clothing on the mannequin. In order to remove the clothing, some disassembling is involved. The typical mannequin always has removable arms. Many styles the arms, hands, torso, and left or right leg are removable. We will discuss how to disassemble the more complex mannequin, if yours is the basic model you will just need to remove the arms. In order to get started you must remove the arms. There are two basic types of arms magnetic, or pop-in. For a magnetic connection grab the wrist and pull out and away from the mannequin as if they were doing a jumping jack one arm at a time. If it is a pop-in connection you must grab the wrist and lift straight up as if they were shrugging their shoulders. Always remove the arms through bottom of the shirt so you do not stretch the merchandise. If the hands are removable make sure to take them off before pulling the arm out of the sleeve. Take the arms and hands and lay them aside on a padded area. Once the arms are off the body, you will now be able to pull the shirt over the mannequin' s head. The next step is to lift the mannequin off of their base. There will be a metal or plastic flange that connects the mannequin to a base. The flange is usually located on the calf of heel of the mannequin and is on the leg that is not removable. To take the form off of the base locate the flange and unscrew the thumb screw. This will loosen the connecting making it able to lift off of the base. Next we want to carefully lay the mannequin down on a soft padded surface to reduce the chance of chipping or scratching the paint. Once the form is lying down, remove the shoes the final item to remove is the pants. If the form has a detachable leg, the majority of them twist off. Take the foot and hold the heal with one hand and the toes with the other while standing over the form locking the bock in place between your legs. Twist your hands in a clock ways rotation unlit the connection is free. If you are working with a detachable torso it is removed the same way and make sure to take that off before removing the leg. Once the leg is detached simply slide the pants off of both legs. Lay the legs next to the arms.
Step 2
Now that we have a fully disassembled mannequin fully naked, it is time to clean it. The first step in having a clean presentation is to make sure the hands match the arms, the arms match the body, and there are no large chips and splits on the mannequin. If there is I recommend painting it with the factory supplied touch up paint, sending it to be refurbished, or throwing the part away and replacing that part. This is the time where you want to apply the commit or magic eraser sponge, use as directed on the package. Take the cleaning material and use it to polish up the mannequin and erasing the scuffs and finger smudges on it. Next grab the glass cleaner and clean up the base and if the mannequin has a neck block clean that as well.
Step 3
Once the clothing is picked out and you are ready to dress the form the first step is to steam the outfit to remove the wrinkles. The next step is to put the new pants. First make sure all of the security tags are ether hidden or removed. Then grab your seam ripper and remove all of the exposed out side tags and packaging. Place the removed items into one of the pants pockets or pin it to the inside waist seam. Some of the mannequin also have their flange located on their upper back leg. If yours has this, you must take the seam ripper and open the back leg seam about a quarter inch to insert the pole through the hole and into the opening. Once this is done, put the pants on and reattach the leg by following the steps of taking it off. Match up the grooves and twist the leg back on. Next, put on the shoes. Place the base where you want the mannequin to stand and insert the flange into the base and tighten the connection with the thumb screw. Replace the torso if applicable and put the shirt on the same way it was removed over the head. Then add the arms from the bottom of the shirt opening through the sleeve. If its magnetic let it click in keeping clear of your fingers, it can pinch them. If it is pop-in find the groove and slide it in making sure there is no material in the way. Finally, attach the hands.
Step 4
Once your mannequin is dressed, steamed, cleaned, and in the position you want it in you must rig it. I recommend tipping it first by adding the accessories so you know exactly where you want things to hang, fall, and cover. First is the pinning process. The with pinning is to hide the pins. If the mannequin can be viewed at a 360 degree angle the pins need to be hidden. To pin the shirt, grab the seam that runs down the side of the shirt from the arm pit to the waist. Pull the seam to you and fold it in half to the desired tightness. Keep in mind this is only one side and you are going to repeat it on the other seam so do make sure it is half of where you want it to be. Once your extra material is folded over creating the "new seam" pin the shirt in the same direction the seam runs. You only need two pins on each side the for the top and bottom. Make sure they are straight as well. Start with the back side of your new seam and run the pin through the shirt so it is pointing in the direction the mannequin would be walking in. Next aim the pin straight down and back through the fabric securing it together. This is the way dressmakers pin the clothing they are working on. Once you pinned both sides and accessories its time to clean up the hair. Spray and brush how ever you like if it is a hard head with no hair this is not nessacery. If the waist is a little large use a pin to tighten it up in the back inside waist band. Style your mannequin following the guidelines of "wear now" and add a nice pop by flipping a collar, cuffing a shirt, draping a sweater over the shoulders, or any other creative way you can think of. Finally grab your camera and take some pictures at a few different angles making sure to capture all of the surrounding merchandise that is included. Make sure to adjust the lighting on the mannequin as well as the clothing and have picture perfect neat merchandise.
